Regulatory Standing & State Requirements

Guardian 6 Protection LLC is a private security company regulated by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Private Security Program, licensed as a Level 2-4 Training School (License #F31037201) and a Guard Company (License #B31072001). All training programs are developed and administered in accordance with the current DPS-approved manuals, examinations, and curriculum guidelines. Guardian 6 Protection provides state-required training and issues official training certificates upon completion. Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, direct answers to common training and licensing questions.

No, Guardian 6 Protection provides your state-required training and issues your official training certificate upon completion. The Texas DPS issues your security license separately, following review of your TOPS application, IdentoGO background check, and, for armed applicants, your MMPI psychological evaluation. Your license must also be affiliated with a licensed security company in TOPS before it is active. Guardian 6 Protection provides structured guidance through each of those steps.

Yes. Level II Non-Commissioned Security Officer training is a mandatory prerequisite for Level III. When you submit your armed security officer application through the TOPS portal, both your Level II and Level III certificates of completion must be included together. Texas DPS requires training to be completed in sequential order, as Level II covers the foundational legal responsibilities and field rules that Level III builds upon directly. Guardian 6 Protection recommends completing Level II before beginning Level III coursework.

No. You do not need to be employed to enroll in Level II, III, or IV training courses. However, once you complete training, your license cannot be activated until it is officially affiliated with a licensed security company in the TOPS database. Guardian 6 Protection is available to assist candidates in navigating that requirement.

Effective January 1, 2024, Texas House Bill 3424 mandates that all Level III armed security candidates complete at least 10 hours of in-person training with an approved instructor. This physical module must cover Firearms and Defensive Tactics, including live-fire range qualification and weaponless defense, and must be conducted at an approved range. This requirement cannot be completed online.

No. Under Texas Occupations Code Section 1702.113, a personal License to Carry (LTC/CHL) cannot legally be used to perform private security work. Armed security officers must possess an active Level III Commissioned Security Officer license issued by the Texas DPS and affiliated with a licensed security company through TOPS.

Texas requires renewal of private security licenses every two years. Officers must complete six hours of approved continuing education and pass a written examination. Commissioned (armed) officers and personal protection officers must also complete a live-fire range requalification with a licensed instructor. The firearms proficiency certificate must be submitted to TOPS within 90 days of the renewal application date. Guardian 6 Protection’s automated system tracks enrolled officers’ expiration dates and sends notifications at 120 and 90 days prior, and we provide direct guidance through the TOPS submission process.
